Raising Athletes, Kicking Ass and Weightlifting World Domination
with Linzey Beister
How hard it is just to become average at weightlifting? What sort of background do you think is optimal to become a seasoned, successful weightlifting athlete and coach? What do you do with the 22hrs you spend outside of the gym? How do you raise and develop kids in such a demanding, difficult and niche sport? Thoughts on athletes who train weightlifting once per week?

I couldn’t be more excited and thankful to have the opportunity to bring this podcast to you guys! Linzey Beister is the owner of the hugely successful Gold Coast Weightlifting which has gone from strength to strength since opening its doors a few years ago. I feel as though I could write endlessly about the pearls of wisdom and the perspective challenging questions that Linzey addressed with lived experience, insight and great amounts of detail in this episode. Not only is the man ridiculously talented and clever at what he does as a coach and business owner, he has a genuine love for helping people get better and is one of the most awesome and nice people I’ve had the pleasure of talking shop with and learning from.
There is quite literally something for everyone in this episode. From stories of his own development and growing into his passions, turning them into business, visions of integrated sporting epicenters, approaches to interacting with and coaching types of people, weightlifting politics, commonwealth games athletes, and kids in sport. The growth and success of the club (in part) due to breeding a culture which invites a feeling of ‘home’ for many of its athletes is a testament to Linzey’s craftsmanship as a coach, his ability to relate to people and savvy business approach (to name only a few things).
Brandon Wakeling and Beau Garrett are two great hopefuls coming out of Gold Coast Weightlifting Club and coached by Linzey who are set to take out top positions in their weight categories in the up and coming Commonwealth Games trials which Australia is lucky enough to host next year. Hosting this competition on home turf and being able to enter athletes in every division is a rare occurrence. We encourage all of our listeners to get amongst it and tune into the spectacular display of weightlifting ability on the 17th of December held at the Quay Sport Centre (formerly state sport centre)… in fact you should absolutely try and witness it in person!
Special thanks to the Linzey for joining me this week. Check him out his Instagram, and follow his awesome club on both Instagram and Facebook
Thanks for Listening!
xx Andy
